How We Got Started
My first cruise was in 1978 aboard the SS Emerald Seas, bound for the Bahamas—and it was not a great introduction to cruising.
The ship developed engine trouble and was operating with only the starboard propeller, so it seemed as though we were constantly listing to the right. Our cabin was tiny, and I’ve been in phone booths larger than the bathroom—or the “head,” for you nautical types.
One evening, my beautiful wife put on a white gown, and I took her to the fantail for what I hoped would be a romantic moment. We stood together watching the ship’s wake when we noticed something drifting down around us. It was soot from the ship’s stacks—on her white gown. Very romantic!
Despite that experience, we decided to give cruising another try in 1994, this time with our two young daughters. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the cruise, and our daughters—who had not wanted to go in the first place—absolutely loved it.
From that point forward, every family vacation discussion began with the same question: “Where are we going on our next cruise?”
That’s how our love of cruising began. Since then, we’ve gained years of firsthand travel experience, and we would love the opportunity to put that knowledge and enthusiasm to work planning your next cruise.
